Fumage
Fumage is an art technique in which impressions are made by the smoke of a candle or other burning object on a piece of paper or other paintable surface. The term was coined by Wolfgang Paalen (1905-1959), a prominent Austrian-Mexican surrealist painter who developed the technique and incorporated it in many of his canvases.
In the case of these paintings, instead of canvas or fibrous paper, I use Yupo, a form of plastic paper (100% polypropylene) which some artists use for painting with watercolor, inks or acrylics. By combining fumage, watercolor and inks, I am exploring color, shape, depth and surface qualities of these media in order to reach a new level of allusiveness in my paintings.
